Happy-Go-Lucky Book Review. “The Dress Doctor. Prescriptions for style from A to Z” by Edith Head.
by Cashmere Wrap & Macadamia Nuts
Edith Head, the iconic costume designer awarded with eight Academy Awards for the Best Costume Design. Her unique, almost royal, sense of style created extraordinary costumes for the most admired Hollywood’s stars such as Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Mae Vest, Ingrid Bergman and many more.
This little, beautifully illustrated book is filled with comments and suggestions in Edith’s own voice, mentoring and preaching fashion principles and best practices in the art of dressing. Some of the delectable expressions, like “breakfast coat”, “date dress”, “french blue”, “car coat” or “patio dress” made me pause and smile. Some of the advices made me pause and think (“Don’t be afraid to wear a becoming costume many, many times. It’s an old fashioned idea that you must have a new dress for every occasion or a party. Even if you have the money to do so, it isn’t necessary. The modern approach is to change accessories.”).
This book is an anthem to the transformative power of style, still actual even though written in 1959. So if to believe the author, “you can have everything you want in life if you dress for it”.
