After the wedding, Grace renounced her movie career to become wife, mother and to serve her official duties as Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco. The royal couple had three children, that became a center of attention for Grace and one of her greatest joys in life. Although offered many roles, Grace never returned to her acting career.

Princess Grace died tragically at the age of 52, after a fatal car accident. James Stewart, her co-star from “Rear Window” movie, paid a tribute to Grace Kelly in his eulogy “You know, I just love Grace Kelly. Not because she was a princess, not because she was an actress, not because she was my friend, but because she was just about the nicest lady I ever met. Grace brought into my life as she brought into yours, a soft, warm light every time I saw her, and every time I saw her was a holiday of its own.”

Week with Grace Kelly. Day 6. Grace Kelly Style.

large-10

Grace Kelly was a classic blond beauty, who needed very few additions to her natural glow. As visible on pictures portraying Grace in her private life, she understood and embraced “less is more” and “quality over quantity” principles in building her personal wardrobe. Her style was very elegant, ladylike and classic, with strong focus on perfect fit and timeless accessorizes.

To summarize the essential Grace Kelly Style, three key points to remember:

  1. Light Color Palette – Grace Kelly preferred light color palette and above anything else favored pastels, white, beige and camel.
  2. Daring Details – Although her look was very modest and classic, it was never boring since some daring details such as bright red lipstick, shoes in contrasting color or more elaborated scarf complemented an otherwise toned down outfit.
  3. Classic Accessorizes & Signature Pieces – Grace Kelly stayed true to few accessorizes that soon became her essential pieces – big sunglasses, Hermés scarf, not to mention the Hermés Kelly bag. There is no need to mention that they were all of the best quality.

All this would be nothing without perfect grooming, so discreet make up, natural hairstyle and perfect manicure are integral part of the Grace Kelly look and should never be forgotten.

Week with Grace Kelly. Day 5. “The Country Girl”.

“The Country Girl” is a drama adapted and directed by George Seaton in 1954, based on a successful play under the same title written by Clifford Odet. In main roles Seaton casted Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and William Holden. The movie is black and white, focusing the attention on the plot and characters rather than on glamorous costumes or scenography, staying true to its stage origins.

Contrary to her typical movie roles, when Grace’s beauty and natural charm was used as her main assets, the role from “The Country Girl” movie drama is neither glamorous nor careless. In the movie Grace Kelly was casted as Georgie Elgin, bitter and disillusioned wife, who is tied to an alcoholic husband Frank, suffering through his periods of depression and break downs. Beaten by tragedies, once happy and optimistic, she became prematurely aged, cold and harsh.

In this movie Grace Kelly proved that she is more than just a pretty face, but in fact a gifted dramatic actor. For the  creation she was recognized by the Academy and awarded as Best Actress.

Donald Spoto is a reputable biographer who doesn’t chase after a cheap sensation, but bases his books on an earnest research, writing with the highest respect towards those whom he portrays. His book about Grace Kelly is a fair record of her life, especially that Donald Spoto was acquainted with Princess Grace of Monaco, hearing many facts and stories firsthand from the Princess.

With a lecture of “High Society. Grace Kelly and Hollywood” the reader will learn about Grace’s Hollywood years, beginnings of her movie career, her biggest film projects, including those made with Alfred Hitchcock as well as her creation in “The Country Girl” for which she was recognized with an Academy Award.

There will be a lot about her fairytale romance with Prince Rainer III of Monaco that resulted in a happy ending and a truly regal wedding ceremony held in Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Monaco on the 19th April 1956. After the marriage, Grace Kelly retired from her acting career, focusing on family life and her official duties as Princess Grace. This is where the book ends, saying very little about her married life in the final chapter. Grace Kelly was known for her discretion, therefore unwilling to share her private life which more than once was troubled and remote from the picture perfect official image.

“Rear Window” is one of the classical Alfred Hitchcock suspense thrillers. Released in 1954, was screened at the Venice Film Festival, received four Academy Award nominations and is rated as one of Hitchcock best pictures ever.

Grace Kelly is casted as Lisa Fremont, wealthy socialite and model, who is in a relationship with leading male character L.B. “Jeff” Jefferies starred by James Stewart. “Jeff” is a professional photographer who recovers from a broken leg, which is a result of an accident that happened during photographing of racetrack incident. Temporarily immobilized and bored with idleness, “Jeff” looks for entertainment, watching his neighbors from the rear window. On one occasion, he observes a suspicious situation which involves Mr. Thorwald, one of the neighbors. Based on observations, “Jeff” builds a theory about Mrs. Thorwald, believing that a murder was committed. With a help of his girlfriend Lisa, desperate to prove him that she is more than just a pretty face and can be his companion for life, “Jeff” tries to solve the riddle.

The plot is truly captivating, building more and more tension that is to be culminated in typical Hitchcock style. Like in all Grace Kelly movies directed by Hitchcock, her costumes are perfection and even for them alone worth the time in front of the screen. No wonder, as they all were designed by Edith Head.

Unlike Jane Birkin, who took an active role in designing the Birkin bag for Hermés, Grace Kelly had no contribution into the creation process, but created the Kelly bag legend by simply… carrying it.

For the first time Grace Kelly met “Kelly”, which at that time was known under the name of Sac à dépêches, during the filming of “To Catch a Thief”, when this leather bag with Hermés signature was included by Edith Head into Grace’s official movie wardrobe. Young actress liked the Hermés handbag so much that she continued to use it long after the movie had its premiere.

The Kelly bag became famously associated with Grace Kelly in times of her first pregnancy, when Grace used it to hide her pregnant silhouette from paparazzi and their intrusive camera lenses. As easy to guess, Grace Kelly and her little secret were in every magazine, receiving an enormous press coverage. And so did the leather Hermés handbag.

Since that time, unofficially in the beginning and formally since 1977, the iconic handbag became known as the Kelly bag. Nowadays it is one of the most coveted status symbols.
